Maintenance Appointments and Getting the Most out of your Extensions

What to know before getting extensions

Before having your hair extensions installed, you should discuss with your hair stylist what a maintenance appointment is for, how often you should have one, and how much they cost. Asking only benefits you, as many people have different preferences when it comes to hair extension methods and it is important for you to know the one best suited to you. This is worth both your time, and money.

Hair extension maintenance appointments are so important because your extensionist can keep updated with the condition of your extensions. They can also see if you’re having any problems with your extensions and/or natural hair. Having regular maintenance appointments also gives you the opportunity to ask your technician any questions you might have. Not keeping up with your maintenance appointments or using the correct aftercare products, may result in your hair extensions not lasting as long as you hoped for.

This maintenance appointment involves scheduling to come back every 6-10 weeks. With this appointment, the price would include some new hair (usually 1 pack) which would be used to replace missing or old bonds. During this appointment, any old bonds that might have become weaker, softer, or matted since you first had them fitted will be replaced. Your technician will check through all of your extensions and replace any bonds that need replacing or any that have come out.

There are many benefits of the hair extension bond replacement appointment, including the fact that your hair will look as good as new, having some of your bonds replaced means they will stay in your hair for much longer and your natural hair can continue to grow. Another benefit of this appointment is that most people do not usually lose many bonds so having some added and replaced every 4-6 weeks means you can potentially keep your hair extensions in for the full 4 months.

The uplift appointment involves opening each micro ring and moving the extensions back up to their original position. Unlike the hair extensions bond replacement, no new hair is normally used so if any hair extensions have come out, they would be re-fitted. An uplift appointment would need to be scheduled around 8 weeks after you have first had your hair extensions fitted due to regrowth and natural shedding. After a further 8 weeks we would recommend a full ring replacement and this involves removing all extensions and removing all the loose hair, then replacing rings. No new hair needs to be purchased.

The main benefit of this appointment is that the extensions do not end up moving down too much with your hair as they are regularly moved back up. However, there are some negatives that come with the method, one being that the tips of the stick tip extensions can get softer and the rings can get slightly looser after a move up. When hair extensions are first installed, the tips are very strong, but when they are moved up after 6-8 weeks, depending on the aftercare products you used, the tips can get softer or the rings weaker. This means that you may lose some extensions sooner, so to avoid this, always use the recommended after products.

This method needs maintenance every 8-10 weeks and involves the total removal of hair with a Matrix tape remover spray. Your hair needs to be clarified to remove the spray and the tapes are washed and all product is removed from the hair. After drying, the old tapes are then removed and replaced with new ones, making sure the surface of the tapes are 100% free of old tape or debris. It’s worth noting that this maintenance appointment is normally twice as long as the initial appointment and to factor this in to your budget. Remember though, no new hair needs to be purchased. This process can be repeated up to 4 times during the hair’s lifespan.

It is absolutely essential to maintain tapes as the natural shredding process and hair growing away from the scalp will make the bonds unstable, causing them to twist. This can create unnecessary strain on the your hair.

Zen Hair extensions are made of 100% human hair. Sulphates will dry out the extensions and can also strip them of their colour.

It is essential that you only use sulphate free shampoo and conditioner when washing your hair. That is why we recommend our very own line of after-care products. These products have been designed to protect bonds and tapes from damaging and reduce colour fade in the extensions. Keep in mind the extension hair should only be washed 1-2 times per week.

Make sure the only brush you use on or near the bonds is an extension brush. These are designed specifically to ensure your bonds do not get snagged. It is important to hold the bonds to support them in order to prevent excess tugging on the extensions.

Never go to bed with wet or damp hair extensions! To prevent them from tangling, we recommend you plait your hair before going to sleep.

It’s important to avoid sea water and chlorine in swimming pools. We recommend keeping your hair tied up or using a swimming cap.

Your extension hair may dry out abroad, so bear this in mind and give your hair a deep treatment upon return. The Zen Luxury Hair Mask is a great way to add some nourishment to your extensions.
