Holiday Hair Extension Care FAQ’s

Holiday Hair Extension Care FAQ’s

Hair Extension care on holiday can sometimes feel like a nightmare! We spoke to our UK Educator Simon Stainton to get the answers to our FAQ’s for holiday haircare maintenance.

Can you go in the pool with hair extensions?
Swimming in chlorine is probably the worse thing you can do with hair extensions. Chlorine is a bleach and pools abroad are typically not maintained the same as pools in the UK. Exposure to chlorine may make your hair extensions dry, tangled, or discoloured due to the chemicals and heavy salts/metals found in this type of water – especially those who are blonde. Frequent exposure to chlorine can also break down the bonds overtime.

What effect will salt water have on my hair extensions?
Salt water is very corrosive to hair extensions and bonds so avoid if possible. Salt water can be very drying to the hair, stripping away oils and moisture, leaving your extensions prone to breaking and losing their glossy shine.

How can I protect my extensions from the Sun?
Sun protection for the hair extensions is extremely important to protect hair from damage. You can buy over the counter sun protection products in all good salons but be sure to keep this away from bonds as it can cause slipping. I would recommend using a protective serum on your extensions prior to exposure to the sun.

Are there any hairstyles which are better for hair extensions in the sun?
Wearing your hair tied back in a low ponytail is ideal when exposing your hair extensions to the sun. This hairstyle ensures the bonds are covered without strain. I would recommend brushing the hair thoroughly after every beach or pool day.

What products should I be using to help protect my hair extensions?
To ensure your hair extensions keep their original vitality, be sure to treat them as you would your own hair. For extra shine and protection, I recommend Zen Hair’s lightweight serum, designed to put the nutrients back into your hair. Formulated with Macadamia Oil, it’s great for nourishing and hydrating hair.

What effect will the sun have on my extensions?
Sun will naturally lighten your hair extensions especially the pastel tones reds and coppers. This lightening effect on the cuticles can cause excessive dryness, so be sure to take good care of your extensions.

What effect will sand have on my extensions?
Sand just needs to be brushed out and lightly rinsed in clean water. Do not over wash hair as this strips away the natural oils.

Will humidity make the extensions go frizzy?
Chinese hair being straighter and less coarse will remain unaffected by humidity.

What type of hair extensions should I have for holiday?
Frequent wearers of hair extensions normally cope well on holiday maintaining their hair with little change to their haircare routine. New Extensions wearers however tend to find holiday maintenance more stressful. If you are considering extensions for first time, clip-ins are great for a quick fix!

What is the best shampoo to use on hair extensions?
Always use sulphate and paraben free products as recommended by your stylist. I would recommend the Zen Hair shampoo and conditioner, specifically designed for extensions to wash away impurities and imperfections.

How long do hair extensions last?
The lifespan of your hair extensions will vastly change depend on maintenance and aftercare. Typically, they can last anything between 3 months and 1 year.

What type of hair extensions should I get?
When deciding on the best application method for you, it is best to make an appointment with your stylist to discuss your options. Application method is very lifestyle dependant so go with the best method to suit your needs.
