Looking After Your Extensions Part 2: Washing

Untitled-1

Washing your hair extensions does not have to be vastly different from washing your own natural hair, however it is important tounderstand the best way to do it so that you can make the most out of your new Zen extensions.

We have 5 simple steps to maximise your hair care routine:

 Step 1: Brush your hair

Before you wash your hair, it’s important that you brush it thoroughly using a hair extension (or looper) brush to detangle the hair and separate the bonds. This prevents matting occurring during your shower and will ensure that your hair is easier to brush and maintain afterwards.

Step 2: Hop in the Shower

Ideally, you should always wash your hair in a shower, so that the water flows in the direction that your hair grows. If you wash your hair over the bath or with your head flipped upside-down, your hair can become tangled and prevent you from washing all the product from your hair.

Step 3: Shampoo

Apply shampoo to your hair once it is thoroughly wet. Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp, making sure to get in amongst the bonds. Then work your way through the rest of your hair, stroking instead of scrubbing the shampoo into the mid lengths and ends to avoid tangling. As you are now likely to have considerably more hair than you are used to, you may need to use more shampoo than before for full coverage.

Top tip: we would recommend that you use a good quality pH balanced shampoo and conditioner to wash your hair extensions. Get a shampoo that is sulphate free to avoid harming your extension bonds.

Step 4: Condition

Once the shampoo is removed you can move onto your conditioner.  Apply conditioner from the mid lengths to the ends of your extension hair, avoiding your scalp and bonds. Leave for a couple of minutes then rinse.

Step 5: Dry your hair

When you are out the shower do not wrap your hair in a towel, instead, gently squeeze and pat the hair extensions dry. Try to let your hair dry naturally as often as you can so that you can keep your extensions looking healthier for longer.

Top Tip: It is advised that you do not wash your hair everyday, and this applies to your extensions even more so. We would recommend that you wash your hair around 2-3 times per week.
